My First Love

Last summer, I attempted to do a 30-day challenge where I would write each day for 30 days. Knowing me, you know that turned out like crap and I didn’t finish.

To be quite honest, I wasn’t sure how to tackle the delicate subject of “my first love.” I mean, I knew about whom I would be writing, I just struggled with a way to eloquently string it together so it could even approach explaining the profound impact of the love we shared - and continue to share.

I met my first love, Paul Zagorksi, in Math for Liberal Arts at the University of South Florida in August of 2005. I was not expecting to find anything interesting about that class, taught by the goofy Karol MacIntosh. I sat next to a red-headed guy who seemed personable and someone I could pass the time with. We talked before and after class, and the talks got longer and longer. Once, we ended up on a bench talking for three hours after class, only realizing it when it was dark outside. We seemed to have everything in common and something just “clicked.” We get each other in every way; it's as simple as that.

He asked me to be his girlfriend at the Magic Kingdom during the fireworks on September 18, 2005, after a wonderful day at Disney. I hadn’t been to Walt Disney World since coming to college, and I was so happy to have found someone who loved Disney as much, if not more, than I did.

The first picture as an official couple :-)

We loved traveling to his family’s cabin in Sylva, North Carolina. We spent Spring Break of 2006 up there and explored the area of Gatlinburg, Tennessee and the Blue Ridge Parkway. I spent Thanksgiving 2006 with his family there. I’m so clumsy, his mom constantly reminded me to NOT TOUCH THE CUTCO KNIVES! Shortly after the gingerbread house pictures were taken, I drew blood with a Cutco spatula. I can’t be helped, apparently!

Just before my drawing-blood-with-a-spatula incident!

In December 2006, after Paul did much soul-searching, he realized he needed to come out of the closet, and I can’t say it was easy – for either of us. I was so completely in love with him that I didn’t want to see that we wouldn’t have a future as a couple, even though all signs had been pointing that direction for some time. I had blinders on. It was difficult to be around him for a few months after he came out – it was like rubbing salt in a wound. Here was this amazing guy, that I imagined spending my life with, and we couldn't be together. I needed some space.

One of the greatest things about love is its ability to change. We reconnected in another class, and resumed a relationship as a real-life “Will and Grace.” One of my brothers in Alpha Phi Omega told me “you realize that Grace is still in love with Will, right?” That struck a chord with me and I realized that I was still in love with Paul, but not in a romantic way. I loved every part of him, just not as a partner.

We’ve continued to enjoy all things Disney, and we’ve acquired great friends because of our mutual loves of Disney, like Rich, Ann, Nic, Jer, Summer, and Lara, who are in pictures below. We’ve shared so many good times with these crazy people, and we wouldn’t have met them without Disney!

Making history!!! We took part in the first-ever all-night party at the Magic Kingdom to celebrate "One More Disney Day" on Leap Day, 2012! We left at 3:29am.

Paul and I have continued to make each other laugh, held each other while we cried, and had experiences everywhere in between. We’ve traveled to every state in New England but one (silly Vermont!) in one day, we’ve seen Broadway shows (and weaseled our way on to a Broadway stage!), and we’ve been all over North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. We drove the entire eastern seaboard in 2007. We helped the Disney Dream have a successful inaugural season in 2011 with a fantastic weekend cruise to the Bahamas on a brand-new ship.

Paul and I have made it to the "Il Bacio Wall of Fame" in Danbury!

Us with Grandma Jeanne in New York City, after we saw "Wicked" together. It was a fabulous trip: we stayed at the Waldorf-Astoria and saw two Broadway shows!

We’ve been with each other through the ups and downs of relationships, and cheered each other on when we found love with our guys: he with Josh, me with Colin. One of the first things I would bring up with a new date was the relationship I had with Paul, and Colin had zero problems with that. Colin and Paul have a great relationship and always get along well.

We had a little too much fun tailgating, by the looks!

Finally a nice one :-)

Best buddies on the beach at the Polynesian, enjoying some cocktails on beach chairs and watching the fireworks over Cinderella Castle.

Recently, we have been each other’s support as we strive for a new goal: to run a half marathon! Our big goal is to run a “Coast to Coast Challenge” with Disney: you run a half marathon at DisneyLand and Disney World in the same calendar year and earn a nice medal. We ran our first 5k together in February 2012.

I am so thankful to have my first love still in my life.

This is my love letter to you, Paul. I hope our friendship continues to flourish and grow throughout our lives. I love you!

2012

Hi, 2012! Here's to a great year!

(and, note to self in an effort to avoid forgetting what we did this New Year's Eve: we went to a Lightning game against the Hurricanes (we won! Stamkos got a hattrick!!) and then hung out at home. )

...drumroll, please....

Yes, you read that right.

Oh my gosh!

2-for-2!

Day 2-Meaning behind your blog name

My URL is mandizzleinreallife.blogspot.com, and my blog name is "Mandy in Real Life." I named my blog that because it's a play on the title of the film Colin and I saw on our first date, "Dan in Real Life," starring Steve Carrell. I figured that a blog would be an account of my life, so it fit.

The username mandyinreallife was taken, however, so I used my nickname, Mandizzle. That was the nickname I got in college, when my roommates and I had "-izzle" nicknames. My big, Vanessa, even gave me the nickname "Dizzled Pink" when I became an Alpha Phi Omega brother in college, since my favorite color is pink. :-)

Here goes nothing!

Day 1-A recent picture and 15 interesting facts

This is me at Fenway Park 7/13/11

15 facts about me:

  1. I can only whistle one note. I can't whistle a tune to save my life.
  2. I'm an avid Patriots fan, and I have been for as long as I can remember. You won't be able to sway my allegiance! I was there when we hardly won, I've been there when it was -20 with a wind chill! I'm NOT a fair-weather fan.
  3. My graduating class from my public high school in rural Connecticut had 86 members. No wonder I wanted the "opposite of Cheers" for college: where no one knew my name!
  4. I can't drive a stick shift. I'm motor-challenged!
  5. I have recently become moderately obsessed with coupons.
  6. I have learned that youtube.com can be a VERY valuable source for instruction when you're trying to teach yourself new knitting stitches... or how to crochet from the beginning! (I'd rather have my Mommadoo teach me, of course, but I'm a very visual learner and it's hard to learn new stitches over the phone. Boo to living so far away!)
  7. As I'm writing this post, I'm finding I use parentheses too often, but that's what I get for being a language arts teacher, right?
  8. I was obsessed - literally - with all things Disney during college. I was over at Walt Disney World at LEAST 3-5 times a month. I turned 21 there and drank around the world with my parents, who flew down to join my friends and me. You can't say that my parents aren't awesome!
  9. I'm a grammar and punctuation freak. If you know me at all, this is no surprise.
  10. Even though I didn't like it very much when my parents would make me read every informational sign and/or map when we went anywhere new while I was growing up, I now appreciate the ability to get my bearings with relative ease on maps and my craving for learning more about new places. Thanks and props to you, Mom and Dad!
  11. I'm pretty opinionated; however, MOST of the time, I can understand why others could have a differing opinion, and I do my very best to accept their opinion and not be confrontational....99% of the time. I just can't stand idiocy.
  12. I count things without realizing it, like steps, stairs, intersections, and lights.
  13. I taught internationally in 2007. I can't wait to go back to the UK for the Olympics next year!
  14. I've lived in 2 states and moved a total of 6 times. Since moving to Florida in 2004 for college, I've moved 5 of my total 6 times. I'm glad I own my house and I won't be moving for a while!
  15. Saying goodbye to my family in CT has gotten harder each and every time I leave. I spend most of today crying on and off. I'm sure I got some weird looks as I sat on the plane in sunglasses, trying to look stoic, with tears streaming down my face.
Well, that's it! Here's to hoping I'll follow through with the rest of the challenge! :)

I'm Baaaa-aaack!

Things to be happy about!

I hate negativity.

Wow, talk about redundancy!

I wanted to post things to be happy about/things I enjoy/things I'm looking forward to.

To start out, check out the new hair cut. Can't beat the special Ulta was running!

When I was driving home, I saw this breathtaking sunset and I HAD to get a picture of it! This is the pond in my neighborhood:

pretty spectacular, huh?

We have a long weekend coming up from 3/18-21, since our school district's Spring Break isn't until APRIL 22ND!!! What the heck? I've never had a break start that late, even in CT. Oh well. I'm thankful that we'll have a nice four-day-weekend though. Colin and I are having a friend of mine take pictures of us, since we have never done that. It should be fun!

On that long weekend, my big, Vanessa (HI BIG!) will be here in Florida in part to celebrate her St. Patrick's Day birthday. I'm so looking forward to seeing her again and celebrating together.

So, after March comes APRIL....and APRIL brings 3 things:
  1. Baseball
  2. MY BIRTHDAY
  3. Easter
Yay for the Rays, me, and Jesus. Well, I guess it should be in reverse order. So YAY JESUS, me, and the Rays. Let's hope we have a great year (all of us!)

I'm also super excited because my brother, David, is graduating from college at Oklahoma State University in May, and my awesome mom found an airfare I could afford! I'll be flying into DFW Thursday night, and back Monday night. I'll get to see much of my extended family, so that's awesome!

This summer holds exciting events as well. We'll be going to Memphis to meet for our yearly vacation. I think it'll be mostly everyone: Mom, Dad, David, me, Colin, Melissa, Matt, Ruth Ellen, Emma, and CJ. I'm not sure about Lauren, but I'm sure she'll make an appearance if she's able.

So, yay for happiness, trips, and family! :-)
